Patent 0001344796 "INNOVATIVE METHOD FOR FORMING COMPRESSION OF POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE BASED SANDWICH PANELS"

Innovative solution for production of sandwich panels with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) skins and foam.
These panels have a composite skins of glass fiber, PET matrix and foam or PET honeycomb core.
Sandwich panels have strong potential to be used in automotive transport sector, since they low weight is associated to a high mechanical strength. One of the limits of sandwich panels is given by the difficulty of panels production during the step of adhesion of the core to the skins. In fact, to take advantage of thermoplastic properties of polymeric material, promoting adhesion without contribution of additional material, it would be necessary to reach melting temperature of PET, which is particularly high and difficult to manage, also because of associated risk of collapse of the solid constituent cell core.
The invention object of the patent consists in the idea of interposing, at the interface skin/core, a film of thermoplastic material compatible with PET, which has, however, melting temperatures lower than PET. In this way it is possible to realize the panel without the need to reach melting temperatures of PET, with obvious advantages in terms of time and process cost.
The solution can be applied to automotive and furniture industries.
