Objective | FF4EuroHPC is a European initiative that helps facilitate access to all high-performance computing-related technologies for SMEs and thus increases the innovation potential of the European industry. Two Open Calls were offered through the project, targeting the highest quality experiments involving innovative, agile SMEs. Proposals addressed business challenges from European SMEs from varied application domains. In the first call, CETMA supported MANTA Group, an Italian SME expert in the production of composite components using the autoclave process, the main fabrication method for composites in the aerospace sector. This process involves mechanical and chemical phenomena and a lot of variables affect the final result. Therefore, an expensive trial-and-error approach is typically required to set a cure cycle for complex-shaped components in order to reach the requirements and minimize the risk of defects. The objective of this experiment was to optimize, through advanced simulations, the autoclave process maximizing the quality of the components and minimizing time and costs. A multi-physics and multi-scale numerical model was proposed in the MULCOM experiment. The analyses were based on a multitarget optimization criterion to consider the relative interaction between the process parameters and how they influence the presence of defects, the fibre distortion and consequently the mechanical performances of the final component. To do this, considerable computation resources were required and therefore the HPC infrastructure of CINECA was used.
CETMA’s role | In MULCOM CETMA was the technology expert partner of Manta Group, developing and validating a multi-physics and multi-scale numerical model, able to accurately analyze the thermo-mechanical behavior of an aeronautical composite component during the autoclave process.
